Barrio Lindo, also known as Agustín Rivaldo, is a renown Argentinian artist into the electronic folklore scene, now based in Berlin, with many EPs and albums in many important labels and currently leading Shika Shika collective. Today, he travels promoting his successful album ¨Albura¨ (listen to it at the bottom of this page), its title comes from the term of the youngest wood in a tree. He is coming really soon to Montréal and is ready to be our stellar guest this Saturday 29 September for our launch of Cosmovision Records at Les Jardineries.
We talked with him about music and various projects:
1.- Your music has a lot of spirituality. Which is your relation between art and spirituality?
Well, primarly since I was young I’ve felt very interested about the pre-hispanic cultures of the Americas. It’s music and instruments that are generally part of different types of spiritual conceptions. From the Andes music at the carnivals to the Yoruba Afro Brasilian music.
I feel that music and specially the act of dancing, are part of our contemporary spirituality.
2.- Can you explain about how your country, or going even further, how the Latin american culture has influenced your music?
Principally the influence is in rhythm, melody and aesthetically. After that the influence is from the land I com from. Argentina is historically a country with lots of social problems which many crisis that come and go as a cycle. Each person that makes an artistic project there faces lots of adversities in terms of resources, spaces to use, etc… then our training comes a lot from the deep underground concept of being very resourceful. From that concept I believe many of us LatinAmerican artists and me, we bring it to every place we go.
3.- You like to collaborate with lots of artists, why?. If you could pick your dream artists to collaborate with, who would that be?
I believe that the process of music production sometimes is very lonely, you need the presence of other hands, ears and aesthetics. I consider very good to collaborate with artists from my scene and other scenes. The list of dream collaborations is very long for me, but today if I could pick I believe that one would be Felix Laband from South Africa.
4.- Which difference you find between the scenes in Argentina Vs Germany?
Well, there are quite a few differences. The context is very different, specially for the young ones. Here in Germany people is not very worried to sustain themselves as there are more resources, a lot more voluntary work and a long tradition of party/events and electronic music. No doubt that some of the best festivals that I’ve been are German, many of them working independently, without commercial sponsors and with a very high artistic quality.
In Argentina on the other hand the resources do not allow that, in the technical area I believe we are behind but in the artistic terms on the other hand, I feel that South America is a very inspiring place for music, where it can be expressed with a lot of freedom, without the typical tags so it always keeps being quite more fresh.
In Europe I believe the scene cares a lot about in which genre or style of music you produce music.
5.- How do you see the future of electronic folklore and similar styles?
This scene has changed and has been globalized a lot. In my opinion this genre, initiated by Gaby Kerpel, Chancha vía Circuito, etc… has been mixed a lot with the German slow techno scene. That’s why there are many doors that have been opened in Europe and also many European producers check out the folkloric music from South America from a Techno standpoint. I feel that it has became so popular that many artists, specially Latin Americans, we are looking for new creative directions but continuing the same message. Music that has not been born specifically for the dance floor, but still works and brings a lot of freshness.
I don’t know which one is going to be the ¨new tag¨ here but the high quantity of awesome music producers in these styles is growing every month.
6.- Do you know any artist of these styles based here in Canada?
Yes I know Oonga, with whom we’ve released his music for the collective that I co-founded, ¨Shika Shika Collective¨, also I know Risa with whom we’ve crossed paths in Mexico and we both follow each other’s work in music.
7.- Which are your artistic projects for the future?
At this time, I’m finishing a tour for my last album Albura, released in April’s 2017. For which I was traveling in South America, the US, Europe and Japan. Today I’ve got a lot of collaboration projects but also I’m about to finish a new album that will be released on 2019.
8.- Some words for Cosmovision Records and the Montréal people!
I’m very eager to arrive and explore the scene in Montréal. I believe it’s a great luck for me to be present in this launch moment and to be invited. I’m sure we’ll have a great time. See you soon!

Barrio Lindo, también conocido como Agustín Rivaldo, reconocido artista Argentino de música electrónica de raíz folklórica radicado en Berlín, con varios EPs y albums en diversos sellos y liderando el colectivo Shika Shika, Actualmente viaja promocionando su excelente album Albura (escúchalo al final de esta página abajo) y pronto a visitar Montréal, donde además será invitado estelar del lanzamiento de Cosmovision Records.
Conversamos brevemente con él sobre música y proyectos varios:
1.- Tu música tiene mucho de espiritualidad. Cual es tu relación entre el arte y la espiritualidad?
Bueno, primeramente, desde mi primera juventud, me he sentido interesado y curioso acerca de las culturas prehispanicas de América. Su música y sus instrumentos, que generalmente son parte o instrumento en distinto tipo de espiritualidades. Desde la música andina de carnaval, hasta la musica yoruba afro brasilera.
Siento que la música y sobre todo el baile, forman parte de la espiritualidad contemporánea
2.- Nos puedes explicar cómo tu país Argentina, o más allá, la cultura Latinoamericana influencia tu música?
Principalmente influencia rítmicamente, melódicamente y estéticamente. Luego influencia mucho de donde vengo. Argentina es históricamente un país con serios problemas sociales, que cíclicamente vive profundas crisis. Cada persona que realiza un proyecto artístico se encuentra con adversidades en cuanto a recursos, espacios, etc. , entonces nuestro training viene mucho del lado del underground profundo. Y esa misma escena la trasladamos a cada lugar que tengo el placer de visitar.
3.- Te gusta colaborar con muchos artistas, por qué?, Si pudieses escoger el artista de tus sueños con quien colaborar, quién elegirías?
Me parece que el proceso de producción al ser a veces tan solitario, necesita de la presencia de otras manos, oídos y estéticas. Me parece muy rico el colaborar con artistas de mi escena y otras escenas diversas. Uf la lista de colaboraciones de ensueño en larga. Pero hoy en día si pudiera elegir, creo sería Felix Laband de Sudáfrica.
4.- Cual es la diferencia que encuentras respecto las escenas en Argentina Vs Alemania?
Bueno, son unas cuantas diferencias. El contexto es muy distinto, sobretodo para los jovenes.
Aquí en Alemania la gente no está tan preocupada por sobrevivir, hay más recursos, mucho mas trabajo voluntario y una tradición como pocos lugares en cuanto a la fiesta y la electrónica.
Sin lugar a dudas creo que de los mejores festivales que he ido, varios son alemanes. Funcionando independientes, sin sponsors y con una alta calidad artistica.
En Argentina los recursos no permiten, en cuestiones técnicas estamos bastante atrasados, pero en cuanto a lo artístico, siento que sudamérica es un lugar muy inspirador donde la música se puede expresar con mucha libertad, fuera de tags y siendo así mucho más fresca.
En Europa aún creo que es muy importante el género o estilo que produces.
5.- Cómo ves el futuro del folklore electrónico y los estilos similares?
Esta escena en los últimos años ha cambiado y globalizado mucho. En mi opinión este género iniciado por Gaby Kerpel, Chancha vía Circuito, etc , se ha mezclado mucho con la escena slow techno alemana. Por ese motivo se han abierto muchas puertas en Europa y además muchos productores europeos revisitan la musica folklorica sudamericana desde un lado del techno.
Siento que se ha vuelto tan popular, que muchos artistas, sobretodo latinoamericanos, estamos buscando nuevas direcciones pero continuando el mismo mensaje. Música que no ha nacido para el dancefloor, pero que sin embargo funciona muy bien y trae mucha frescura.
No se cual será el próximo tag pero la cantidad de productoras y productores talentosos que hay en este tiempo, crece mes a mes.
6.- Conoces algunos de los artistas de estos estilos basado en Canadá?
Si conozco a Oonga, con quien hemos ademas lanzado su música por el colectivo que co-funde SHIKA SHIKA COLLECTIVE, además también de RISA con quien nos hemos cruzado en México y seguimos nuestros trabajos.
7.- Cuales son tus proyectos artísticos a futuro?
Al momento terminando una gira de presentación de Albura, mi último album lanzado en Abril de 2017, con el cual estuve viajando por Sudamerica, US, Europa y Japón.
Al momento tengo varios proyectos de colaboración, pero además terminaré pronto un nuevo album que saldrá en 2019
8.- Algunas palabras para Cosmovision Records y la escena de Montréal?
Estoy muy curioso de llegar y explorar la escena en Montreal. Me parece una gran suerte para mi presenciar este momento y ser invitado. De seguro la pasaremos muy bien. Hasta pronto!
