Joe DeFaria aka J.Pool is an artist Born and raised in Canada with a portuguese background from his father. After graduating as Sound Engineer he took a big journey into music creation, both with his own artistic project and with the “In-Spirit Retreat” where he combines music and spiritual development.
His last EP Yohana with Cosmovision Records has received lots of love all over the world and is a deep trip into beautiful acoustic and electronic sounds with the collaboration of 3 awesome artists: Intiche, Yemanjo and Moontide.

- What’s your cultural background, what’s the music you heard at home when you were a kid?
I was born in the south of Ontario, Canada, but grew up with a strong influence from my Dad’s Portuguese Family. My Grandparents and much of my Dad’s family immigrated to Canada in the early 60’s from Portugal.
My Parents are huge music lovers and always encouraged my interest in music. They also have a massive variety in taste! Between my mom and dad I would be listening to anything from Supertramp to Madonna to The Gipsy Kings and I loved it all. I was exposed to almost all genres from a young age and I’m really grateful for that, jazz, rock, country, world, disco, etc.
- What’s been your all time musical preference, name 3 bands of your life, also 3 downtempo and/or electronic folklore artists you like.
This is a very difficult question but I will try:

- Why and how did you start making music?
I started playing guitar at 11 years old but I never took it too seriously, it was always something I enjoyed doing for fun. Around 17 years old I started to get really into electronic music… Dubstep in particular and various types of house and trance. One day I was with some friends listening to dubstep and i realized I had no idea what I was actually listening to… like what’s even making these sounds I have no idea! My friend had a copy of the program Reason and offered to give it to me, I was completely obsessed from the first time I opened it… 2 years later I left University where I was studying to be a software engineer to study audio engineering instead and I think it’s been about 8 years since I first opened Ableton Live.. I’m still equally addicted and in Love.
- Which are your favorite technical tools to create music, also do you use some acoustic instruments you like?
I use Ableton Live to produce and to perform. For Producing I’ve become really accustomed to producing without hardware because I’ve been travelling almost non-stop for the last 4 years and had to get used to a very minimal setup. For plugins I love waves for mixing, I use some synths and fx from native instruments for producing, like reaktor, but I also still really love to get creative with the ableton instruments and just chopping up audio clips. For Live set’s I love the midi fighter, it’s an amazing midi controller with limitless possibilities for mapping.
I still play guitar, a lot more now than when I was younger actually, I have many songs with my guitar on it, I love electric but my favourite is classical nylon strings! I also love playing flutes, I have a beautiful 2 tone native flute as well as some bansuri flutes from India.
- Do you have any relationship with spirituality? Would you tell us a little about your InSpirit retreat project?
Yes I have a relationship with Spirituality. When I was 19 studying at University I got really depressed for the first time in my life. In this moment (long story short), the practice of Meditation and the book “A New Earth” by Ekhart Tolle came to me. The combination of reading that book and practicing meditation inspired a huge spiritual awakening in me and is a huge part of the reason why I realized I had to leave university and pursue music. Since then I’ve been on an internal journey, discovering myself through reading many types of philosophy including ancient eastern, classic western, and various modern and new age. I’ve also been travelling… a lot, through latin america, india, indonesia, europe, africa, and even many places in Canada. Spending a lot of time in nature (I used to work as a tree planter in Canada for many years) and participating in various types of spiritual ceremonies, events, and communities.
The “In-Spirit Retreat” is a holistic music production retreat. This means that it’s not only our goal to share with our students the technical skills required to produce music but also to connect to something deeper, to their creative spirit and where that source might be within, and how to connect with nature to encourage that source to flow.
- How do you see the current downtempo scene in the world?
I see the downtempo scene as a scene with a very committed group of fans and artists. Those of us who resonate with this style of music really love it, and I think we are all committed to helping it evolve, grow, and be heard by more people. Unfortunately so many people still have no idea what we’re even talking about, but a lot of the time when they hear it they love it, I think we need some more exposure to help share this music that is such a beautiful combination of the spirit of the past and the possibilities of the future. Obviously there are some places where it’s more well known than others but I feel in general that this scene is still very much a growing plant with a lot of potential.
- Could you give us a background of your Yohana EP, where did the idea come from, in just a few words, how was the process of creating it?
The first tracks I made from this EP were Sumac and Camino Lejos while i was living in Berlin in summer 2019, this was just before my first experience with ayahuasca, but somehow I think I knew it was coming and already was connecting with the spirit of the plant because those songs are very different from anything else I had made yet and also very different from anything I was hearing in Berlin. Jambudvipa I made last december while I was in India, and Respeto Por Ti and Yohana were made in Nicaragua this past Spring. So it was a bit spread out the process, I didn’t really realize I was making an EP until I had 4 songs and I realized there was something inside of me trying to be expressed and it was connecting all of these songs together. I really can’t explain my full experience from that ceremony with you here but I can say I definitely had a profound experience and connected directly to the spirit of the plant, especially in the form of the great serpent. That experience took some time to integrate and I feel that these songs are really a reflection of the energy I experienced in that moment.
- Which are your future projects from now?
Right now I’m working on many projects, just trying to stay as creative as possible and to keep expanding. I plan to keep making retreats, some other types of projects, and of course a lot of music! I want to continue working with other artists to learn and grow together and to not be afraid to explore different sounds and ideas. Right now I’m working with Mose, Porangui, Lemurian, Janax Pahca, Numa Medicine Music just to name a few! I’m also excited to continue working with the Momentom Collective this coming year and for some amazing projects coming up with my friends in Bali.

¿Cuál es tu origen cultural, cuál es la música que escuchabas en casa cuando eras niño?
Nací en el sur de la provincia de Ontario en Canadá, pero crecí con una fuerte influencia de mi familia portuguesa, por parte de mi padre. Mis abuelos y gran parte de la familia de mi papá emigraron a Canadá a principios de los 60s desde Portugal.
Mis padres y familia son amantes de la música y siempre alentaron mi interés por esta con una gran variedad de gustos!. Entre mi mamá y mi papá se escuchaba de todo, desde Supertramp hasta Madonna y The Gipsy Kings, a mi me gustaba todo. Estuve expuesto a muchos géneros desde muy joven y estoy muy agradecido por eso, hablamos de: jazz, rock, country, world, disco, etc.
Cuál ha sido tu preferencia musical de todos los tiempos? nombra 3 bandas de tu vida, también 3 artistas de folklore electrónico y / o downtempo que te gusten.

¿Por qué y cómo empezaste a hacer música?
Empecé a tocar guitarra a los 11 años pero nunca lo tomé demasiado en serio, siempre era algo que disfrutaba pero sólo por diversión. Cerca de los 17 años comencé a meterme de lleno en la música electrónica … Partí con Dubstep y varios tipos de house y trance.
Un día estaba con unos amigos escuchando dubstep y me di cuenta de que no tenía ni idea de lo que estaba escuchando en realidad: ¨¡como hacen estos sonidos?!¨ me preguntaba. Luego un amigo tenía una copia de Reason que me regaló y quedé completamente obsesionado desde la primera vez que lo abrí.
2 años después dejé la Universidad donde estaba estudiando para ser ingeniero de software para cambiarme a ingeniería en sonido y creo que han pasado unos 8 años desde que abrí Ableton Live y aún sigo igualmente adicto y enamorado de ese programa.
¿Cuáles son tus herramientas técnicas favoritas para crear música, y usas también instrumentos acústicos de tu preferencia?
Utilizo Ableton Live para producir y presentarme en vivo. Para la producción me he acostumbrado mucho a trabajar sin hardware porque he estado viajando casi sin parar durante los últimos 4 años y tuve que acostumbrarme a una configuración minimalista.
Respecto Plug Ins VST, me encantan los Plug Ins de Waves para mezclar, utilizo también algunos sintetizadores y efectos de Native Instruments como Reaktor, pero también me encanta ser creativo con los instrumentos de Ableton o simplemente cortar clips de audio. Para los Live Sets, me encanta el Midi Fighter, es un controlador midi increíble con posibilidades ilimitadas de mapeo.
Respecto los instrumentos acústicos. Todavía toco guitarra, mucho más ahora que cuando era más joven en realidad, tengo muchas canciones hechas con guitarra y si bien me encanta la versión eléctrica, mi favorita son las guitarras con cuerdas clásicas de nylon. También me encanta tocar la flauta, tengo una hermosa flauta nativa de 2 tonos como también algunas flautas bansuri de India.
¿Tiene alguna relación con la espiritualidad? ¿Podrías contarnos un poco sobre tu proyecto de retiro InSpirit?
Sí, tengo una relación con la espiritualidad. Cuando tenía 19 años en la universidad sufrí un período de depresión. En ese momento (para resumir la historia) llegaron a mí la práctica de la Meditación y también el libro “Una Tierra Nueva” de Ekhart Tolle. La combinación de leer ese libro y practicar la meditación produjo un despertar espiritual en mí y es en gran parte la razón por la que me di cuenta de que tenía que dejar la universidad y dedicarme a la música.
Desde entonces he estado en un viaje interno, descubriéndome a mí mismo, leyendo muchos tipos de filosofía, incluida la oriental, la occidental clásica y varias de la era moderna y nueva. También he estado viajando a través de América Latina, India, Indonesia, Europa, África y también muchos lugares de Canadá.
Pasar mucho tiempo en la naturaleza (solía trabajar como plantador de árboles en Canadá durante muchos años) y participar en varios tipos de ceremonias espirituales, eventos y comunidades.
El “In-Spirit Retreat” es un retiro holístico de producción musical. Esto significa que nuestro objetivo no es sólo compartir con nuestros estudiantes sólo el desarrollo técnico necesario para producir música, sino también conectarnos con algo más profundo, con su espíritu creativo y dónde podría estar esa fuente, cómo conectarnos con la naturaleza para fomentar esa fuente, en pocas palabras: fluir.
¿Cómo ves el panorama actual del downtempo en el mundo?
Veo la escena del downtempo como una escena con un grupo de fans y artistas muy comprometidos. Aquellos de nosotros que resuenan con este estilo de música realmente lo amamos, y creo que todos estamos comprometidos a ayudarlo a evolucionar, crecer y ser escuchado por más personas. Desafortunadamente, muchas personas aún no tienen idea de lo que estamos hablando, pero muchas veces cuando lo escuchan les encanta, creo que necesitamos un poco más de exposición para ayudar a compartir esta música que es una combinación tan hermosa de espíritu del pasado y las posibilidades del futuro. Obviamente, hay algunos lugares donde es más conocido que otros, pero siento en general que esta escena sigue siendo una planta en crecimiento con mucho potencial.
¿Podrías darnos un trasfondo de tu EP de Yohana, de dónde salió la idea, en pocas palabras, cómo fue el proceso de creación?
Los primeros temas que hice de este EP fueron Sumac y Camino Lejos mientras vivía en Berlín en el verano de 2019, esto fue justo antes de mi primera experiencia con la ayahuasca, pero de alguna manera creo que sabía que venía y ya estaba conectando con el espíritu de la planta porque esas canciones son muy diferentes de cualquier otra cosa que haya hecho hasta ahora y también muy diferentes de todo lo que estaba escuchando en Berlín. Jambudvipa hice en diciembre pasado mientras estaba en India, y Respeto Por Ti y Yohana se hicieron en Nicaragua la primavera pasada. Así que el proceso fue un poco extendido, realmente no me di cuenta de que estaba haciendo un EP hasta que tuve 4 canciones y me di cuenta de que había algo dentro de mí tratando de expresarse y estaba conectando todas estas canciones. Realmente no puedo explicar mi experiencia completa de esa ceremonia contigo aquí, pero puedo decir que definitivamente tuve una experiencia profunda y me conecté directamente con el espíritu de la planta, especialmente en la forma de la gran serpiente. Esa experiencia tomó algún tiempo para integrarse y siento que estas canciones son realmente un reflejo de la energía que experimenté en ese momento.
¿Cuáles son tus proyectos de futuro a partir de ahora?
En este momento estoy trabajando en muchos proyectos, solo trato de ser lo más creativo posible y seguir expandiéndome. Planeo seguir haciendo retiros, algún otro tipo de proyectos, ¡y por supuesto mucha música! Quiero seguir trabajando con otros artistas para aprender y crecer juntos y no tener miedo de explorar diferentes sonidos e ideas. ¡Ahora mismo estoy trabajando con Mose, Porangui, Lemurian, Janax Pahca, Numa Medicine Music, solo por nombrar algunos! También estoy emocionado de seguir trabajando con Momentom Collective el próximo año y para algunos proyectos increíbles que se avecinan con mis amigos en Bali.
